Celestyal has confirmed that its ships, Celestyal Discovery and Celestyal Journey, successfully and safely transited the Strait of Hormuz. A statement from Celestyal noted that this development represents a significant operational milestone for the cruise industry at a time of heightened regional sensitivity. On Friday, April 17th, Celestyal Discovery, under the command of Captain Nikolaos Vasileiou, became the first cruise ship to depart the Arabian Gulf, following a meticulously coordinated sailing plan developed in close cooperation with regional authorities and maritime safety teams. This pioneering step establishes a reliable route through the Strait, enabling other cruise operators to follow suit.
Following this, on Saturday, April 18th, the Celestyal Journey, under the command of Captain Angelos Vasilakos, successfully passed through the same passage, leading a larger cruise convoy that departed the area using the designated corridor.
Navigation plans were prepared as a result of extensive coordination with key officials and security stakeholders, ensuring that all movements were carried out with the highest level of safety, sensitivity, and situational awareness.
Exceptional Leadership and Calm Command from the Captains
Throughout the operation, safety remained the absolute priority; Captain Vasileiou and Captain Vasilakos demonstrated exceptional leadership, expertise, and calm command, along with the crews on board and ashore. The captains' efforts in navigating complex and delicate conditions played a vital role in ensuring the safety of the entire crew and the successful passage of both vessels.
Celestyal also expressed its gratitude and appreciation to all regional authorities and business partners for the strong cooperation established, which contributes to ensuring a coordinated and responsible approach in the cruise industry.
Celestyal Türkiye Director Özgü Alnıtemiz stated that the Celestyal Discovery and Celestyal Journey ships, having successfully completed their transit, are currently repositioning towards the Mediterranean and will begin their planned summer season.
“We have successfully navigated this critical period in our Mediterranean program with only a limited number of voyage cancellations. Our ships are finally returning, and we are eagerly and excitedly refocusing on the summer season. We confirm to our guests and all our business partners that all future voyages currently on sale will be carried out as planned. We have all seen that travel is an industry built on collaboration. Rapid cooperation and uninterrupted support played a critical role in managing the process safely and smoothly. We would like to thank all our partners and solution providers, especially our crew, travel agencies, airlines that supported the evacuation process, local authorities, and tourism organizations.”
